La historia cultural
Irving O Fabela Garibay
Grade: 12
Card Number: 18
Refran: "The Mayans created their games, So the sports that we play came to stay"
Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on passion in Mexican sports. I chose soccer as a subject matter because Mexicans started off as Mayans and the Mayan people would play Pitz, and now as Mexicans we play soccer. The colors in the piece represent the soccer team of Club America, and the way Mayans would dress themselves. The images in the piece represent the hole on the wall that the Mayans would try to put the ball in, and the net for a soccer ball to go in. For me personally, this card represents my culture and passion that my family and I have for this sport. I want the audience to see how as humans, and more importantly as Hispanics we have evolved to keep on playing sports just like our ancestors, because that is a very beautiful part about life.
Student Biography: My name is Irving Oziel Fabela Garibay, and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my sister, father, and mother. My family is from Uruapan, Michoacán, México. In my Loteria card, I chose to represent Mexican culture and passion that is soccer. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was the passion in soccer in my Mexican culture and how the Mayan people started off playing a similar game with a ball. Then, as humans we kept the passion of playing with a ball and now we play soccer. The artistic process was making a painting portraying half a Mayan playing Pitz (The Mayan ball game), and the other half a Hispanic playing for the Mexican soccer team that is Club America. Life after high school will be pretty similar to my life right now hopefully. I plan on growing my career in music and growing my band, while also one day receiving my bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering.
