El sacrificio

Alexsander Rodriguez-Lopez

Grade: 12

Card Number: 13

Refran: "I'm not running from home,

but running toward hope."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card, I wanted to share my thoughts on Immigrants. I chose immigrants as a subject matter because my parents are immigrants, and they are giving everything so we can have a better future. The background color represents the sky. The images in the piece represent a desert and parents walking in the desert to cross the border. For me personally, this card represents the Sacrifice of a Parent. I want the audience to see how immigrant parents sacrifice so that their children have a better future and do not end up being like them,

Student Biography: My name is Alexsander Rodriguez, and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my parents and my three siblings. My parents are from Mexico, and my siblings and I were born in the United States. In my Loteria card, I chose to represent immigrants. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card were my parents because they are immigrants, and they are giving everything so that we have a better future. The artistic process was challenging because I did not have any idea what to draw at the beginning. Life after high school will be somewhat complicated because I will be turning 18 and I will have to organize myself and use my time appropriately.
